Always appreciate getting an insight into the animation side of RWBY. I'm not an animator but with that said I don't have to be to see that it takes a lot of time, effort and passion. Love every episode and yes the lever shotgun-chucks are my favorite. I hate to see all the negative comments on the show, they can really get to some people. Keep up the good work guys! I really can't wait to see the next episode!

I was a little worried of where the fight scenes were heading but this last episode reassured me that the animators know exactly what they're doing. Good job is basically what I'm saying.

Kim, when animating this fight scene, do you animate the physical actions of the fight and the facial expressions? Or are expressions a different section of the pipeline?

I’ve really liked how this volume especially has had fight scenes that double heavily as character development and exposition and a huge part of that is facial expressions beyond physical pain or a satisfied smirk.

    I’m loving this volume.

I do all the body animation first. Once the body animation is finished I then animate the facial expressions, hair, etc. Glad you're loving this volume!!!

You guys really sold the physical motion through all the fights in this episode. It takes away a lot when characters stop mid-air or change direction without cause but the was you all played with momentum in the episode was next level!

It was great finally seeing what you had in mind for Ghira and Kali as well. The punch off was a bit... unbalanced? but all the forshadowing and buildup around their fate was inspired :)

Keep up the epic work guys, lov'n this season!

At the end of the volume, I’d love to know the total number of hours that went into making just this volume. I’m certain that it’s astronomical and magnitudes above what the fans would think.

I really enjoyed the one shot tracking scene when Ilia jumps over Blake, and blake grabs her gun mid-air. It gave the fight a more dynamic perspective rather than choppy, hard to follow cuts. The show Iron Fist could learn quite a bit from how RWBY handles fight scenes. ;)

A really cool new process that was featured in the BTS that's assisted in us in improving our workflow on fights this season (starting with ch 10) was the use of proxy/previz variations of the characters!

Animating action scenes with the fully rigged characters can be quite time consuming as they're pretty heavy, resulting in having to excessively create playblasts of our progress to see if the timing is working right.  With these low poly, non-skinned proxy rigs, we've been able to animate fights at a far more rapid pace and allowing realtime playback directly in maya, allowing us to spend a lot of extra time polishing animation and experimenting with different combinations and animation effects

So question for RT how many days or weeks/months approx does it take to make a volume of RWBY??    altogether from start to finish?

    • joelthemann FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

It varies from department to department since our schedules are offset from one another, but collectively its roughly 7- 8 months for this season.  Pre-Production's schedule runs the longest due to getting an early start but also addressing the needs of Animation as we progress thru the season.

From the Animation perspective, we spend roughly 6 - 7 months animating.  up until recently, on average we have been completing animation on episodes within 2 - 2.5 weeks, but we have since grown as a team (a whopping 27 of us now :D), were now completing episodes almost on a weekly basis!

Kim did a fantastic job on the Gunchucks piece. Trying to animate that pole-to-nunchaku transformation of both form, function, and combat style seems like it must be the daunting technical challenge that only people like Monty ever really tried. Here comes Kim to take up the mantle, and she does a piece worthy of the challenge. That clip just had that magical spectacle; that oomph. And I am sure that there are so many others who deserve credit for making that scene what it is - compositors and set designers and camera work and lighting, so mad props to all of you in CRWBY who just take it to the next level. Really great job.

      Thank you!!
In order to get the gunchucks to reform there had to be 3 weapons attached to Sun. The pole is 1 asset and the gunchucks are 2 separate assets. I had to realign the gunchucks together to look like the pole shape then do a single frame switch to the pole asset and then hide the gunchucks.

    • tanukivilla FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@KimboSlasher, for the hiding of the gunchucks I take it you're doing a single frame scaling to 0 of each gunchuck, placing them somewhere unseen (like inside Sun's body), and switching their space to the spine so they stay hidden and basically doing the reverse for the pole.

I'm unclear on the realigning part though.  I would figure the rig would have a separate null control (like a NURBS sphere) that can be used as a space for each weapon controller and/or for snapping each weapon to (before space matching to said null control).  In other words, the null controller would have spaces world, left hand, right hand, and spine whereas each weapon controller would have spaces world, left hand, right hand, spine, and null controller.  That way when the null controller animates with the hand, all three weapons move with it and are aligned assuming they have been snapped and space matched to the null controller.  Is that how your team is aligning things or was this all brute force manual positioning of the weapons for the hiding/unhiding?

I actually posted a twitter to roosterteeth on a idea. I want to see how many likes of comments it can get from the fandom. So concerning vol6 i said don't release it right away. Take a year off to make longer episodes, go over the animation a million times and make sure anything you write in everyscene contributes. Remember what monty said "dont waste animation". Take a year off and make rwby great. Whats everyones thoughts?

I think the issue with that idea isn't that it's not an ideal situation because of course it would be ideal for quality control to take more time on episodes but I am fairly certain the way the production is scheduled probably has to do with cost. The idea being that not only it costs more money to have people working for a longer contract but it also means RT losing an incentive for people to become First Members thus lowering the average income that keep the production running in the first place. With the current production time and staff, the show still reaches a satisfying quality. So it would be harder to justify taking such a risk as to delay the release of next the Volume.

I saw it on twitter actually, and I respectfully say no.

Monty said something along the lines of they try their best, they might not be the best, but if they do all they can at the time, that's enough.

As mentioned already, it'd be bad for business. They're improving the production as they go, and they can't really afford to take a year off just because some people think episodes aren't long enough, or there are errors in animation. It's not meant to be perfect, that's such an unrealistic goal that I can't even fathom it. The episodes are incredibly long compared to V1, and the animation has been drastically overhauled. As someone that didn't watch RWBY in the beginning simply because I couldn't stand the way it looked, it's become something amazing to look at as well as watch. I think people seriously are asking way too much without considering everything that would go into their requests. It's so much easier to look at the released product and point out its flaws. And I for one, don't mind flaws such as animation errors. It's not the core of this show and the story and lore and characters mean 100% more to me than the fights replicating the months of work Monty would put into them. The man was talented and committed, but in no way would I think that his method was healthy. He left RWBY to people he worked with and trusted, and there's nothing that will change that. The way they do it is something I appreciate, since they could have given up - especially with the pressure people put on them.
