There's so much misinformation about global warming. It doesn't help that it's basically become a political discussion when it's not fully understood and there's no full scientific consensus on it. Burnie has repeatedly shown that he, like many others, believes that global warming will cause the planet to turn into Tatooine. In the Cretaceous period, when the earth was very nearly entirely tropical, the average temperature of the earth was around 20-30 degrees warmer than it is now. So worst case, we lose coastline, and maybe the Sahara grows slightly, maybe it shrinks due to the increased moisture in the atmosphere, but the massive areas in Canada and Russia that are barren tundra would become fertile farmland. Likely the tropical climates would expand northward too creating more fertile environments. Point is, in the past, when the earth was significantly warmer, things were fine. At worst, we lose some beachfront homes eventually.

Burnie's comparison doesn't match because its 5 billion years vs its happening right now so that isn't a good enough reason to think about putting it off

I think it's still valid in the sense that people don't think it's happening right now, even though it is. Therefore their mindset (while wrong) bears a similarity to the sun thing.

The whole global warming issue... It was summarised very well by Christopher Hitchens. If we prepare for (anthropogenic) global warming and it turns out to be false, all we have done is make an error in analysis. If we do it the other way around... well we're about to find out. We only have ONE planet to conduct this experiment on. Common sense would've dictated caution in this case, but as it turns out, we're genetically not so far away from chimpanzees and it shows...

On the topic of alternative energy... there is at least one person that is/was in a position of governing power that believed that THERE IS A FINITE AMOUNT OF WIND EREGO WE CAN'T HARVEST IT FOR ENERGY.

If that's any indication as to where we're at on that...

Why do people always complain about what they talk about? They travel so much, it's a part of their normal lives, so you have to assume the likelihood of something interesting happening to them involving travel is high. It would be similar to complaining about a sportsperson talking about things that happen to them in games all the. So much of their time is spent doing it, where else would you get things to talk about?

You know what's also really bad for the planet? Flying. So maybe fly less - there'd be less complaining about air travel on the podcast AND it would help the planet. Two birds, one stone.

While I agree that flying is really bad for the environment I don't think it's that easy since RT employees fly places for work most of the time and not personal enjoyment.

I wonder how solar panels are made...no toxic, hard to extract/react chemicals and minerals in them or anything. Green technology is usually a trade, not always better. We need an alternative, but the technology is really not there yet:/

people are trying their best to fight climate change.  im on a wave power research team looking at wave power working along side wind and solar as the most dominant source of energy.

That's really cool. I've seen a lot of that research in Europe and always thought that it sounds like a fantastic idea.  I am just fairly ignorant on the subject and need to read some journals on the topic. If you have any good published papers out there on hand I would love to read them.

The polar bears aren't even on the endangered species list and not even close to making it! There was lots of backlash after that video came out from people that actually live on Baffin Island and with the video being recording during the summer months when there isn't snow but wasn't released till the winter. All animals get sick or injured. I really don't like how they manipulated it.

i'm a little confused on the climate change thing.  Are we concerned about the planet itself, or are we concerned about the continuation of the human species on the planet?

    • ImFrelled FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

The second one. The planet itself doesn't give a rats ass about the climate and will continue to spin merrily around the sun for billions of years after we're gone. Then the sun will go nova and the Earth won't give a fart in the solar wind about that either.

Actually burnie explained it best a while ago saying that instead of convincing people to save the planet, we should market it as fighting the planet, stopping it from killing us

    • Chewy77 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Chewy77

it's more about our survival. The planet has gone through a lot of changes and will be around well after we're gone, probably.
As the climate changes at an unprecedented rate, the current norms such where we can farm, source water, live, even fish will change dramatically and we probably won't be able to adapt fast enough before millions die.
But i imagine the most relatable thing regarding climate change for most people would be insurance. Housing/cars etc. in storm prone areas will be un-insurable because storms are predicted to get worse. Insurance companies are already preparing for that.

There is a principle in politics, never ask a person to choose between eating tomorrow, and some future good. This is one of the principle problems with climate change activism in the US. Some of the poorest areas in the US are former coal mining regions. If you do not want areas that rely on fossil fuel industries to become the same way, there needs to be a replacement. However, the biggest activists have never provided a solution.

I come from a small town in rural Texas. My town was dying. Then the oil industry showed up, and everyone got good paying jobs. How do I convince the people in my town to abandon the oil industry? Something needs to replace what the fossil fuel industry provides.

Also, that polar bear was not dying due to the seals disappearing. It was sick, and couldn’t hunt. That doesn’t mean that climate change is not real. But telling lies (even unintentionally) is not helpful.

i love how they start the climate change conversation as a joke, like "how can someone NOT be onboard with this" then finish with "well, we dont really know if we are causing it or if the earth is just doing stuff on its own". and obviously we ARE doing something about it, gus JUST said how they turned on a new big solar plant.

That ugly-ass motherfucker has the audacity to call climate change a hoax, even when people around the world are already starting to feel its deadly & devastating effects. I doubt even those poor polar bear pictures would move him, given that he has no heart. He cares more about making more money for himself than he does about saving the planet. He's simply a vile & disgusting waste of human life. The damage he will do to the environment will be irreversible, and I want to see that he suffers dearly for it!

They're missing a huge problem with solar, in that many places cannot get enough sun enough of the year or day to meet demand, or the infrastructure and construction needed to build ways to transport the electricity and grids, and be able to monitor it and charge for customers is much more complicated than meets the eye. Many times we are compared to European countries that use renewables, but its apples to oranges, we face many other unique challenges, least of which are population and land sizes.

There are tons of seals in the arctic, there is no sea ice. That means the seals are not forced to haul out in specific places and the polar bears are not able to hunt them as effectively.

Luckily the rest of the planet decided to move forward without the US and start working toward solving climate change. It's absolutely shameful what was once considered the most powerful and influential country in the world, is not taking part in a literally global effort to save our planet. Because a bunch of old men think it's a "scam". And people are dumb enough to believe them.
