You can't recycle greasy cardboard, unless it's grease from human meat. It messes up the machine, and the recycling company likely has to throw out their entire supply of recycling materials to make up for it.

Where did people get the idea that you can't recycle greasy cardboard? I've never heard of it, and if it actually is a guideline, how is your recycling infrastructure so fragile that a little grease breaks it? I mean come on

I work in recycling, and don't worry.  You can recycle those greasy pizza boxes. :)

    - Some areas have that listed just to curb garbage that winds up in recycling, so that don't have to sort it out.

don't you just shred the cardboard, turn it into pulp, wash it, then send it back to be reformed into new cardboard?

I knew not everything can be recycled, but not everything with the symbol can be? That's f**king stupid. Brandon is right, then why have the symbol at all. The gerenal public are not going to read a number every time, yes we are that lazy. If I the person buying it can't recycle it then don't put it on the product.

Don't know about Austin, but the recycle bin I have comes with a sticker covering the top with pictures as well as words for reference. Also, the reason food containers aren't recycled without cleaning them out, if I had to guess, is to reduce the likelihood of allergies getting mixed in. (Remember, some individuals are so sensitive they can get a reaction just breathing it on someone's breath) But I could be way off as I don't know if whatever process is done kills off allergens or not.

    • tekym FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@jmb83 Food containers aren't recycled directly into other food containers, the reason you're not supposed to recycle unwashed food containers is that the oils/grease from the food can muck up the recycling process (i.e., chemistry).  Nothing to do with allergens.

I can't believe they made an RTAA of an argument fight where it's impossible to hear anything they're saying! We in Norway take Recycling really serious though. We got different bins, and bags for plast, cardboard, glass, metal, small electronics, food, wood, fabric and everything else. Bottles we pant. As a world leading oil industry, we gotta compensate with something, right?

Gus, you are wrong.  You can recycle styrofoam.  It's not the easiest thing to do because blown Polystyrene (#6 plastic, you'll see the 6 inside of the Recycle triangle and the letters PS below it) can't really be re-processed back into the building blocks from which it came.  You can recycle grease-tainted cardboard, because all of that corrugated cardboard is made up of several paper layers, which get broken back down in the recycling process into pulp.  In the upper midwest where I come from originally (Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois) recycling was a big thing because it created jobs.  Here's a quick example of the jobs we supported with recycling that I can remember:

Alcoa, Bettendorf Iowa.  Aluminum mill that makes aerospace and automotive grade aluminum billet.

Midwest Poly, Clinton Iowa.  Recycled 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7 plastics.  Ground up styrofoam containers into loose Polystyrene for use in cattle bedding.

Green Line, Waterloo Iowa.  Took post-consumer 2, 4, and 5 plastics and melted them down, reformed them into farm field/construction tubing.  Those giant rolls of black, threaded plastic outdoor plumbing?  Recycled, and made in Iowa, USA.
International Paper, Cedar Rapids Iowa.  Recycle paper and cardboard into consumer grade paperboard, and corrugated cases.  Do you eat Lucky Charms or Capn Crunch?  Both are made in Cedar Rapids and BOTH are boxed in post-consumer recycled cereal boxes.

Leggett and Platt, Sterling, Illinois.  Steel Mill.  Uses an electric-powered furnace to turn recycled steel of all grades (from steel aerosol cans to old railroad rails) into brand new steel, 410 tons at a time.  This not only recycles old steel, but helps cut down on the need for fresh ore mines, which serve to damage the surface of the Earth further.

Guardian Industries, DeWitt Iowa.  Glass mill.  Makes glass for the automotive and construction/commercial/residential sectors.
Saint Gobain, Festus, Missouri. Glass mill.  Makes glass for BEER BOTTLES!  Those bottles go on to hold Budweiser (yuk), Schlafly, and Boulevard from Kansas City (mmmmm...tasty)!  Remember kids, Moderation, and always recycle.

What gets recycled depends on the recycling company and the facilities they have, as far as I know.  Some companies will take the styrofoam and some won't.  Some will take cardboard that has food waste on it.  Some don't.  So while you're totally right that styrofoam can be recycled, not all recycling programs will take it.

Awesome to hear how so many different types of industries make use of recycled materials!  I'm glad to know it's all going somewhere!

I agree with Chris, Brandon, and Gavin. If it has the recycling symbol on it nobody cares about the method of how they recycle. Further most waste today in major principalities doesn't just go to a dump or a recycling center. It goes to a processing and sorting plant where recyclables are pulled out and sent to the proper place, so really it doesn't even matter all that much if you throw recyclables in the garbage bin because most of the time waste and recyclables will end up in the proper places regardless.

To recycle pizza boxes, you need to rip it in half and recycle the part that doesn't have grease stains because that part is recyclable. The part with grease, where the pizza was, is not recyclable so throw it away! Simple.

So went to the Edmonton Waste Management Facility tour the other month, they said that the #1 question they're asked is whether Pizza Boxes are recyclable.  In Edmonton, at least, the answer is actually "yes".  That said, apparently Edmonton's facility is world class (40% trash deflection, looking to get it up to 90% in the next few years) and is able to recycle a lot of shit that other plants cannot

Oh, and while they're technically able to recycle styrofoam, they can't sell the recycled styrofoam to anyone so it ends up just being thrown out in the end.

Didn't know it's cause it breaks the machine though.

It has been very weird for me, moving from the middle of nowhere where I could recycle like, 5 different items at most? And had to sort them all meticulously myself as well; To a city in an eco state that I now put more in the recycling than I do the trash because the recycling center accepts that many things.
But greasy pizza boxes is still not something you can recycle.

Styrofoam (aka polystyrene) is number 6, but for styrofoam peanuts check with your local guidelines as not all recycling centres will accept EPS (expanded polystyrene.)

Yes those "non"-recyclable things are recyclable, but each city has rules that tell you what recyclables are recyclable. The reason is that each city has a specific set of machinery and techniques to do the recycling and, like everything else that's done by humans, is inconsistent between cities. You need to sort the different things from each other and process them differently.

Also, the t-rex things sounds so much like a Gavin thing to say.
