The Desk of The Desk of Death Battle - Doctor Strange Screws Humanity - Writer & Editor Notes

      • It's been a little while since I've had the chance to write a Desk of. I've missed it!
      • The way this episode came about was actually pretty close to the premise of Desk of. I just remember when Sean was writing Doctor Strange VS Doctor Fate and how he kept coming across all of these crazy comics. So I just picked his brain and then came across this comic run (The Oath, 2007) Just like Joceyln!
      • I'm really happy my "soft taco chalupa crunchwrap sorcerer supreme" joke stayed in the final script. It's just so stupid.
      • In the actual comic the story is told non-linearly. So there was a lot of discussion on how to layout the events and a lot of reshuffling. At the end of the day we picked the easiest way to tell the story quickly because our goal isn't to summarize the comic, we want to make fun of it as much as possible.
      • For that reason I left out some pretty crazy stuff from the comic like how Strange fights a crazy monster to get the potion or how Strange went inside Brigard's mind and eventually locked in him inside his own brain. WEIRD STUFF.
      • The thing that drove me nuts is all of the brief explanations of why magic can't heal Wong. It apparently has limitations except that Strange finds a magic potion that can cure every disease known to man. OKAY.
      • Also the Nicodemus West stuff is so ridiculous.
      • I wish there was a camera on me when I wrote the "These two are two peas in a pod...or two rabbits in a hat...with a bat...and a six four Impala." line. I was trying to think of a way to compare Strange to West and the rest of the line just poured out of me with such glee. ALSO I HAVEN'T STOPPED SINGING I WISH BY SKEE-LO FOR WEEKS YOU  CAN ASK MY WIFE.
      • I'm not even going to start on the Magic Nazi Hitler Gun

Another week another round of editor notes!

Top 10 Nightmare Fuel in Kids Movies - Editor Notes

#10 - Dumbo - Like any kid worth his salt, I used to rewatch my Disney VHS tapes constantly. I only ever saw Dumbo once. The elephant parade is probably why. No thanks!
#9 - Toy Story - Still my favorite movie. I wrote "Joshua" on my VHS clam-shell.
#8 - Wizards - I've never seen Wizards. It looks horrifying.
#7 - Spirited Away - I love this movie, obviously but it still creeps me out! Also here's an actual editorial note: I originally had one ominous sounding track to play through this entry and then Chad suggested that I save that track for the pig parent reveal. The whole entry works so much better because of it. That's one of the many reasons I love collaborating at ScrewAttack. It always makes thing better.
#6 - Return to Oz - Never saw it. No thanks.
#5 - Brave Little Toaster - I've never seen this all the way through. I feel like I should.
#4 - All Dogs Go To Heaven - Nick talking about his Dalmatian, Disney, gets me. It's so sincere!
#3 - Coraline - I've never seen this either! But I had to cut this together so I kinda know every that happens now. Oh well.
#2 - Watership Down - Watership Down sounds like a straight up war movie. Like what??
#1 - Willy Wonka - This is another movie from childhood that I only watched once. One and done. It's creepy!

The Desk of The Desk of Death Battle - Red's Special Pokeballs - Editor

      • So quick story: Ben watched this cut to approve it but hadn't heard anything about this script or video. So the "Pokeball" reveal really caught him off guard. It was pretty hilarious. Also this manga is WEIRD.
      • It's SO HARD to find music right for Pokemon. I've probably already said this but it's still true.
      • As you might imagine, coming up with an appropriate title and thumbnail for this episode was an ORDEAL.
      • 02:44 - everybody poops, Jocelyn.
      • I tried to find a clean (no music, no additional edits) clip of Emeril doing his "Bam!" thing for the line: "Let's kick it up a notch." It doesn't exist.

Another week, another round of random thoughts disguised as insightful editing notes. Here we go!

The Desk of The Desk of DEATH BATTLE - Powerpuff Girls meets Dragon Ball Z  -  Editor Notes

      • I was really happy to start this edit. I've been waiting to do a Desk of on this show. (Powerpuff Girls Z)
      • The nostalgia was strong with those Toonami commercial I used in the intro.
      • Originally I had something different planned to show PPG fusing with DBZ but then after the 2nd or 3rd time listening to the V.O. I realized it had to be a blender. (Also at this point I honestly can't remember what my original idea was)
      • Death Battle should probably do a PPG fight huh?
      • It is SO HARD to find a song that sounds like the PPG theme song. I would find something with that distinct beat but then the feel of the melody would be off and vice versa. I think the song I ended up with works but obviously you can't beat the original song.
      • No offense to Phineas and Ferb fans, it just started in 2007 and that's why I used it.
      • All things considered the Black Mirror clip I used right after feels extra dark.
      • Here's hoping "Z rays" is stylized as "ZrayZ"
      • We didn't include it in the actual episode so make sure to check out Lisa singing the PPG theme song in this promo clip.

It's time for another round of notes! This week we had an episode of Top 10 I wrote and an episode of Desk of Death Battle I edited. So check out those videos and come back to read up on the random thoughts that pop into my head while I work here at ScrewAttack.

Top 10 Bounty Hunters - Writer Notes

      • It is always fun to write something and send it off to Nick to see how he'll put everything together in the edit.
      • Nick ad libbed that this list should have been "Top 10 Cowboys" - solid point. It turns out a LOT of bounty hunters are cowboys.
      • I'm really happy to have gotten the Name with No Name and Dr. Schultz on this list. The movie nerd in me is pleased.
      • I would actually be really interested in seeing the actual list of professions in order of their appearance on Earth.
      • Two lines in this episode I'm particularly fond of: "On a list of bounty hunters you’ll find a lot of people wearing hats and boots of the cowboy persuasion." and "The best bounty hunter on our list isn’t a cowboy and doesn’t frequent standoffs, Mexican or otherwise".

The Desk of The Desk of DEATH BATTLE - Jojo's Egg Baby  -  Editor Notes

      • One selfish aspect of this job that I indulge in is trying to fit in references to shows/movies I like.* This episode, I really wanted to include this clip from Superbad ("Oh no, it's the cops!") for when Jocelyn says "Oh no!" but it just didn't work so I went with Kristen Wiig instead.
      • *Hence Community reference.
      • As scary and confusing as that little Jojo baby's also pretty cute.
      • When you edit a biweekly show, it's always fun when the script calls for you to shake things up. The "To be continued" tag gag at the end of this episode was...dare I say...thrilling. Haha probably a exaggeration but it was so fun to see that come together.

The Desk of The Desk of DEATH BATTLE - Batman Beyond Is Messed Up  -  Editor Notes

      • I don't know, Lisa, your Batman voice is pretty good if you ask me.
      • This was an interesting edit because I had a lot more time to work on it. So I did a lot of extra passes and kept adding things each time. It got a lot more TLC!
      • This tangled mess of Batman lore is almost expected when you keep writing for this character decade after decade. Lots of good stuff though so carry on I guess!
      • Hypocrite alert: A movie with old Bruce, Terry, Dick and Barbara would be awesome.
      • Side note: the Pete Holmes/Collegehumor/Batman sketches are so great.
      • Thanks for all of the nice comments on this episode by the way. We all really appreciate it! See you next episode!
      • Also.....I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby. Come with me Friday, don't say maybe. I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you ooh.

      • I don't have any videos coming out this week!
      • I spent this week working on next week's Desk of Death Battle and helping out with Top 10s.
      • So here's a random string of thoughts from the desk of a ScrewAttack editor and writer:
      • Premiere Pro, the editing software we use, is strange. I've edited with almost everything under the sun and I do think PP is my favorite but I have a theory that because it's such a composite of editing programs, it can be buggy. Almost every week we have to gather together and problem solve a weird PP issue with someone's project.
      • Speaking of gathering together, anyone remember the MTV movie/show 2Gether? Yeah. Good times.
      • Speaking of good times, the concept not the show, I've been playing a lot of Stardew Valley after work this week. I got a Switch back in June and it's probably the game I've played the most. So fun.
      • Speaking of fun, again the concept not the band, I forgot my lunch at home on Tuesday and went out to eat with Noel and Torrian. Torrian told us all about being a parent and Noel and I agreed that for now we would just vicariously live through him because we're not ready to be parents!
      • Speaking of segues, you get the joke by now, I finished up Barry on HBO. It's incredible and I definitely recommend it.
      • Anyone have any questions about editing, writing or anything else?

The Desk of The Desk of DEATH BATTLE - Mario FLASHES Peach?!  -  Editor Notes

      • And people freaked out about seeing Mario's nipples...
      • Why didn't they make this issue of the manga about seeing Mario's butt crack or something? He's a plumber! That at least plays into a stereotype. This is just strange.
      • I had to key frame that mushroom over Mario's...swimsuit...area. That's my job!
      • There's a part of this script that talks about how Mario doesn't really say anything in his games. But we do get "It'sa me, Mario" obviously. So does that make Mario a Pokemon - he only ever says his own name?
      • For those of you actually interested in editing notes, I used a lot of nested sequences and a lot of directional blur. Like a lot.
      • Anyways, thanks for doing that research, Jocelyn. I'm really glad it was YOU who had to bite the bullet bill and key frame/blur out Mario's penis and not ME.
      • JK IT WAS ME.
      • Also while I have you, what's your favorite Mario game?

This week, instead of editor notes, I'm going to write about RTX! This is my first! Which is kind of crazy. I've been in the community for years, long before I started working here, but for whatever reason I've never made it to an RTX. My first time will be as Staff. That fact blows me away a little bit. I'm so grateful for getting to do this and doing work that I'm passionate about. That's probably what I'm most excited about for my first RTX. We all get to meet up because of a shared passion. That's pretty cool. I'll be at all things ScrewAttack and in between I'll be around checking out what this amazing company has to offer! I hope to meet y'all and chat! I'll be the wide-eyed video editor/writer.

P.S. I worked on this week's DBX. Check it out tomorrow at noon and/or be at RTX!

The Desk of The Desk of DEATH BATTLE - The Power of Friendship  - Editor Notes

      • It's always fun (sometimes also hard) when the script doesn't describe anything specific in terms of TV/Movies/Comics/Games cause then I get to rack my brain for scenes from movies etc. It's one of my favorite film geek activities.
      • Also it turns out adrenaline has been depicted in movies quite a bit.
      • Lisa really really brought her A-game this week. She got so much mileage out of those cookies. Haha oh my gosh. I let every single one of those clips play out as long as they could because I didn't want anyone to miss a frame of it. Wow.
      • ALSO has anyone had the new oreo flavors?? I had the red velvet ones a couple weeks back and they are SO GOOD. (This ISNT an oreo ad)
      • Sometimes when I'm editing I can't help but rewatch bits from the movie or show. This week it was that scene from Deadpool that I used. Gosh, that movie is funny. Like is it a straight comedy? Probably not but for a comic book movie, it's funny. I gotta check out Deadpool 2. I missed it. Did you see it? Is it good?
      • Also, I love Scott Pilgrim. There was A LOT more footage from this movie in my first draft of the video.
      • If anyone is interested in the context of the Buffy scene I used: The scooby gang uses a spell to transfer all of their "power" to Buffy. So quite literally the power of friendship.
      • Random thought/question: Anyone here a Coheed & Cambria fan? I've been listening to them all morning. Such a great band.

Juri VS Mileena | DBX  - Editor Notes

      • Last night I saw Bo Burnham's EIGHTH GRADE.
      • It was great.
      • I love Bo, who doesn't? He's so great and creative and I especially loved his last special, MAKE HAPPY. It was just as poignant as it was hilarious.
      • So I was very interested to see his feature film debut.
      • And it was great. Really moving, really raw and visceral.
      • I will say that visually, it feels like a first time director. He utilizes a lot of similar shots and techniques multiple times throughout the movie with very similar executions. All effective but repetitious.
      • That being said, the performances were amazing and the story was refreshingly real and powerful.
      • I thoroughly enjoyed it and you should check it out if you can.
      • Also check out Bo's show ZACH STONE IS GONNA BE FAMOUS. It's pretty funny but EIGHTH GRADE is much better.

Oh, and check out this week's DBX and look out for something special coming tomorrow....

P.S. I wrote a succinct review of Eighth Grade on Letterboxd - where I write a review for every movie I see.

Thank you for answering my last question.  Considering how awesome RWBY Volume 5 is, I'm not shocked at all Gen:Lock is still on the back-burner.  But since it is a new series that looks awesome, I want to help out to make sure it succeeds.  Right now, I have a character I would like to donate to you guys sometime.

  • Questions answered by JoshuaKazemi

Not annoyed at all! I asked around and it looks like things on that end are still wrapped up in RWBY Vol. 5. So, there will most likely be little information about Gen:Lock until some time after this production is finished.

Yeah! Josh is great. (I'm only picky about my name when I'm being credited. In that case I prefer 'Joshua Kazemi')

Gen:Lock looks amazing. I am so excited for it. I don't know much about it beyond what the community knows. The staff saw the teaser - the one that played in front of Lazer Team 2 - a few months back and I've been anxiously waiting for it ever since. ScrewAttack also works right next to RT Animation so, animation is always on my mind!

I have no idea! Haha sorry. I do know that the Animation Department is always working really hard on a lot of ongoing and new content for the community. Keep your eyes peeled!

It's great. I've been a fan for a long time. I have to pretend everything is normal and that I'm professional even though I sit in between Nick and Chad everyday, see Miles walking around our office, and watch them film Million Dollars But ten feet from my desk. Crazy stuff and I love it!

Hey! I'm Josh. I'm doing really well today. It's been a good day at work. How are you doing?
