Work has been nuts lately. My co-worker announced that he was leaving for a new job last month and shortly after the CIO made the same announcement. Additionally one of our AS/400 techs retired earlier this year and the City Manager decided that the job was not going to be filled nor retooled.

The AS/400 is schedule for final shutdown in September which means our other AS/400 tech will be out of a job. Again the City Manager has decided to reclaim the job.

I am kind of bummed by all the people leaving at once, but I am also kind of worried about the future of the department. All of the jobs that are being vacated are being eliminated. There is no reason to re-staff these positions but they could be retooled for something else. My hope when I was hired three years ago was that some of the older staff members would retire over time and there would be room for me to advance. Instead they are leaving/retiring and their jobs are being eliminated.

My boss was promoted to Interim CIO for the time being and I think he stands a good chance of being made full CIO...in six months minimum. So for the next six months I will be pretty much running the show as the lead network administrator. Of course that is a self given title, there is no promotion in this for me, just more work.

Assuming he is made full CIO, logically I should be in line for his old job. Assuming the job isn't eliminated (as has been previously demonstrated), I will have to decide if I am ready to move into management. I am definitely qualified to do so, but I enjoy working on computers and would lament the loss of my technical skills in a management position.

The next six months will be pretty interesting. As always I continue to monitor the RT Careers Page :-)

I don't drink any alcohol. It's something I was never interested in doing and, in my mind, it is an expense I am happy to not have.

It's Saturday night and I am alone again. I hate to think that my lack of interest in drinking is preventing me from socializing but it is growing more difficult to not draw that conclusion.

I got to see Star Trek beyond tonight at an early showing at Alamo. They played the Star Trek RTAA before the show started!

I briefly started playing Pokémon Go yesterday but I had to put it on hold when I found out about the problem with ios and using a Google account. Luckily there was an update for the app today that resolved the problem.

There is a gym outside of my window at work and two checkpoints that I can pick up from inside the building. Because of this there are tons of people walking around outside staring at their phones and there have been some pretty high level Pokémon battles at the gym. My coworkers and I took a Poke-walk downtown and almost every person we met was playing the game. Later I found out that my sister, who has never had interest in Pokémon, had been playing it too. Her coworkers got her started.

My first RTX just wrapped up. More on that when I get to a computer. For now I will just say that I had the time of my life and can't wait until next year.

A coworker has been bugging me to participate is corporate cup. I am not much of a runner but figured I could get through a one mile run. On Saturday I went running to get an idea of what my time would be. There is an elementary school near my house that has a public path maintained by the city where people can exercise and walk dogs. I was running around the mile loop of the path when I came upon an elderly gentleman walking a fox terrier. I moved over to the left to pass as I had done for several other people I had already passed walking dogs. The dog turned to look at me and as it lunged at me I remember thinking that I was going to trip over it or get tangled in the leash. It wasn't until after it bit me that it occured to me that the dog was not friendly. Luckily the owner got the dog under control and I only had to have two stitches.
