Work has been nuts lately. My co-worker announced that he was leaving for a new job last month and shortly after the CIO made the same announcement. Additionally one of our AS/400 techs retired earlier this year and the City Manager decided that the job was not going to be filled nor retooled.
The AS/400 is schedule for final shutdown in September which means our other AS/400 tech will be out of a job. Again the City Manager has decided to reclaim the job.
I am kind of bummed by all the people leaving at once, but I am also kind of worried about the future of the department. All of the jobs that are being vacated are being eliminated. There is no reason to re-staff these positions but they could be retooled for something else. My hope when I was hired three years ago was that some of the older staff members would retire over time and there would be room for me to advance. Instead they are leaving/retiring and their jobs are being eliminated.
My boss was promoted to Interim CIO for the time being and I think he stands a good chance of being made full CIO...in six months minimum. So for the next six months I will be pretty much running the show as the lead network administrator. Of course that is a self given title, there is no promotion in this for me, just more work.
Assuming he is made full CIO, logically I should be in line for his old job. Assuming the job isn't eliminated (as has been previously demonstrated), I will have to decide if I am ready to move into management. I am definitely qualified to do so, but I enjoy working on computers and would lament the loss of my technical skills in a management position.
The next six months will be pretty interesting. As always I continue to monitor the RT Careers Page :-)
